Olympus E-3: Made for the extreme Created for professional and aspiring photographers alike, the E-3 boasts a host of features designed to make shooting in tough conditions a breeze. Guaranteeing perfect results no matter what severe conditions it is confronted with, the E-3 ensures amazing image quality and unrivalled reliability – from the wet tropics to the searing heat of the desert or frozen arctic landscapes. This flagship Olympus E-System powerhouse is protected by a splash and dust proof magnesium-alloy body which was developed to protect against the toughest shooting environments on earth. But the remarkable qualities of the E-3 are not limited to terrestrial shooting – it is also the perfect tool for shooting in zero gravity and low pressure environments in space.

The Olympus Space Project: Dr Koichi Wakata Two great milestones are coinciding in 2009: Olympus looks back on ninety years of business success, and it is also the UNESCO Year of Astronomy. To mark the occasion, Olympus is celebrating with the Olympus Space Project. As part of the project, Dr Koichi Wakata, an astronaut from the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), will rely on the outstanding features of the Olympus E-3 D-SLR and ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses to shoot breathtaking images of the Earth from the Kibo, the Japanese experimental module within the International Space Station (ISS). In addition to its regular feature set, the flash pop up mechanism of Dr Wakata’s E-3 is deactivated while small moving parts such as the hotshoe and remote cable connection have been removed. A special transparent body cap was also developed to allow a broken lens to be spotted before it flies off in a zero gravity environment. And since rechargeable LI-Ion batteries are considered flammable, AA alkaline batteries are being used. These minor modifications to suit the needs of this particular mission mean that the E-3 is now entirely safe for use in space. Global Warming Witness: Misuaki Iwago As part of its commitment to the environment, Olympus supports wildlife photographer Misuaki Iwago’s Global Warming Witness project, in which he records and documents the present state of the natural world. Focusing on global environmental issues and nature preservation, Misuaki Iwago has been photographing animals in their natural habitat for decades. The Global Warming Witness project involves expeditions to difficult shooting locations such as Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa and Canada’s Wager Bay – both perfect environments for the sturdy and reliable Olympus E-3. Making an important contribution to raising awareness about the threat posed by the effects of global warming, the Global Warming Witness project also showcases the awesome capabilities of the E-3 when faced with extreme conditions. Eye on the storm: Mark Humpage When it comes to severe weather conditions, extreme photographer Mark Humpage always has his eye on the next storm. From stormchasing across the flat plains of Kansas or Texas, to treks to the arctic to photograph the northern lights, he relies on the Olympus E-3 and a range of E-System lenses and accessories. Since becoming fascinated with severe weather patterns and tornados in the 1990s, he has been addicted to the thrill of hunting down and documenting the awesome displays of power that nature presents in storms and tornados. When the going gets tough, he knows he can depend on the robust weatherproof features of the E-3 to handle the extreme conditions that his work leads him into.
